Congress failed to...
Well, Congress failed.

Basically, the two parties of government were unable to come to terms on a spending measure that would keep non-essential government services funded. So there's no money to run things like national parks, government agencies, etc. The tap has been turned off. Until they can agree, the offices will remain shuttered. The main sticking point is the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. Rather than start a political flame war here on Oppo, I would suggest you hit some US news sites to read about it.

Excellent suggestion. We don't need politics in our cars.

Thanks. That explains a lot.
I think the situation is clear enough and flame wars and further discussions are unnecessary. But thanks for the info!

Excellent suggestion. We don't need double posts in our double posts.

This is probably the nicest way of saying "We're more sick an d tired of it than you can imagine and we just don't care anymore" that I've ever heard. In response of another poster saying "More cars, less politics" I present you with this gif of a rally car hitting a little understeer.

Also noaa.gov is down, but nws.noaa.gov is working properly.

I think the NWS is considered a critical asset, as it should be.

Couple feet to the right and it would have been oversteer.

Actually a couple feet to the right and he would've had to throttle through the steer.

From my limited knowledge:
Our Congress basically has to pass a temporary funding measures until they come up with a real budget, so pretty much "here's how much to run the USA until XX.XX.XX date" for the past year or so. With this legislation the Republican-controlled House has tried to defund the healthcare legislation (too much money) and included language that states the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare, already signed into law) individual mandate (stating you get health insurance or pay a penalty) must be delayed for a full year. When this legislation was sent to the Democratic-controlled Senate, they removed the Obamacare legislation and sent it back to the House for revision. The Republicans in the House kept the Individual Mandate Delay and then added a clause stating legislators and their employees must give up their subsidized healthcare perks ($5-$10k a year, essentially paying for their monthly healthcare costs), hoping the Democrats would not want to be seen saving their own perks at the cost of beginning the Individual mandate and starting a government shut down. The Republican party tied a completely unrelated Law into the legislation for temporary funding measures. This would be like a bank stating you need a GPA of 3.0 or higher to get a home loan; completely unrelated to purchasing a house but they want it or you get no loan. Also, the Democratic Senate will not budge on delaying the individual mandate so we have a stalemate and except for some functions the US government is closed. Employees at national parks, zoos, administrative offices, etc. are off work without pay. Federal police officers must report to work without pay and mission-critical operations must continue without pay. This is extremely detrimental to war fighter operations in the field. Essential government functions are still running though, or pretty much Congress is still getting paid.
Anyone feel free to add notes or corrections.

Actually- thanks Tea Party . Its not "both" parties. Its not the executive branch. Its not the Senate. Its not even the GOP. Its a small band of Tea Party wack jobs in the House doing what they promised they would do to get elected . And then trying to lie about it (poorly).

I agree with you, but I'm trying to keep things neutral and non-political. The last thing we need is a political flame war on Oppo. We've got Gawker for that.

True Dat. Was just trying to explain for the non-US oppo users. All the statements were factually correct (well "wack jobs" was a bit over the top I admit, but the Tea Party hasn't elected the most, umm, err, what's the word I am looking for here [polite version of cuckoo for cocoa puffs ].

Can we all agree that a government shutdown should mean we can ship over and register any car we want during the shutdown.

I like the way you think!

Whoa.
This thing looks very serious. Much more serious than I thought. If this doesn't show clearly enough how much congressmen care for anything that isn't themselves, I don't know what does. Reaching a stalemate because both sides can't reach a understanding that's the least bit good for both sides AND that little thing no one cares about: People.
Thanks for the explanation. Much appreciated.

Saw that same screen at work earlier. I'm a contract employee for NOAA and needed to look up someone's e-mail address, denied.
We are still working through the furlough, but can't use our government e-mail or anything else, like equipment or supplies to do it.

I was wondering about things like this. I can see why there would be no updates or other maintenance to a site, but have they turned the power off and locked the building? Shut down the servers? I would think that sites like this could have been left running.

I don't know about other buildings, but in ours the power is still on and all the servers are running. There are 3-5 people at any time deemed "essential" who walk through the building and make sure there are no fires or anything and important computers that run simulations and experiments are still running. I imagine it is that way in all government buildings across the country. Our building website is still live but the noaa.gov overall one is shutdown so I guess it is a decision made by each department.
